Finding Stillness: A Look Inside the Mindfulness Based Living Course

My Personal Experience of the Mindfulness Based Living Course

A man and woman have their hands together at the chest, with eyes closed, while standing outside on the grass in a large field.

Ever wondered what's involved in an eight week mindfulness course? Is it just learning how to meditate or is there more to it. This was my chance to find out, so stay with me and find out more about my personal experience.

I chose this 8 week mindfulness meditation course—or should I say, this course found me, at the perfect moment. I was navigating feeling unsettled, alone, and a bit anxious. I yearned for a sense of community, grounding, and clarity. While I had practised mindfulness before, I was reminded that the journey isn’t linear. Life throws curveballs that reveal there’s always more to uncover in yourself, even as you grow.

Facing Resistance & Finding Breakthroughs

Each session at the Wellbeing Centre felt like a reset, leaving me lighter, clearer, and more open. But integrating the meditations into my daily life was harder than expected. I forgot some days, resisted others, and let distractions win. And yet, skipping practice taught me just as much: noticing my self-judgment, realising how it impacted my presence with others, and understanding that missing a day didn’t make me a failure. It simply highlighted how easy it is to fall back into autopilot and how mindfulness gently invites us back.

What I Discovered Along the Journey and How the Course Shifted My Daily Life

I found this course has not only helped improve the relationships I have with other people, but it has also helped to improve the most important relationship in my life—the relationship with myself. It held up a mirror to the patterns, judgments, and beliefs I’d been carrying for years.

The significance of bringing those nuances to light means I became more aware of those things, and once I became aware, everything changed. They can’t hide from you anymore. And although they might not go away from one day to the next, they slowly begin to have less and less of a grip on your life.

It began with subtle changes like catching my inner critic instead of letting the thoughts go by unnoticed. The thoughts had always been there, but now I could see them. Over time, I started to shift these thoughts, replacing them with kinder and more positive ones instead.

Mindfulness has helped me soften. I no longer dwell on the driver who cuts me off or spiral over minor setbacks. I notice my breath more often, especially during daily tasks—walking, brushing my teeth, or eating— feeling more grounded and finding peace in the present moment.

This course didn’t “fix” me, it offered me a way of being with myself and the world and how to work more skillfully, and remind me that I was never broken, just stuck on autopilot.

What Other Participants Had to Say…

Over the years, The Wellbeing Centre has taught hundreds of people, and these people, just like me and you, have deeply resonated and learned from this course.

Here’s what others shared after completing the course:

"[The course] has helped to make me realise the stresses and negative thoughts don’t have to consume me."

“[The course] helped me to cope and breathe [especially with] family bereavement.

“The course has helped me connect with people… take home material and meditations to use at home.”

“It has helped me accept myself and welcome my thoughts—the good, bad, and ugly. I have more patience, feel more able to cope when things don’t go to plan and am taking more time to be.”

Common transformations shared by participants:

  • Feeling calmer and more grounded

  • Letting go of judgment and embracing compassion

  • Becoming aware and allowing negative thoughts to come and go

  • Navigating difficult emotions like stress, anger, or grief

  • Finding peace in stillness, breath, and silence

Final Reflections: Why I Recommend the 8-Week Mindfulness Course

All in all, this mindfulness course opened my eyes to things that have been right in front of me, but I was too busy to stop and realise—beauty in the moment, strength in stillness, and wisdom within. If you’re ready to deepen your connection with yourself and others, you will be fully supported by Julie and her teachings as well as by like-minded individuals that, although seemingly different, might actually have more than you think in common. I can’t recommend this course enough!

Continuing the Practice Beyond the Course

Mindfulness doesn’t end after eight weeks. It becomes a way of being. You’ll leave with resources, meditations, and the support of a like-minded community that keeps the practice alive.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is mindfulness the same as therapy?

While mindfulness and therapy both support self-awareness and emotional insight, they are fundamentally different practices. Mindfulness, as we teach it at the Wellbeing Centre, focuses on building present-moment awareness and cultivating compassion through guided practices. It is not a replacement for counselling or therapy.

We are not therapists, and our Mindfulness Based Living Course is not a form of clinical treatment. If you're working through trauma or serious mental health challenges, we strongly recommend speaking with a licensed therapist, counsellor, or physician who can provide the right kind of professional care.

How can I get started practising mindfulness?

A simple way to begin is by taking a few minutes to sit quietly and focus on your breath. That might sound easy, but many people quickly realise how busy the mind can be. That’s why guided meditations are so helpful when you’re just starting out.

We suggest trying one of these Guided Meditations to help you stay focused and supported as you begin your mindfulness journey.

What if I’m not ready to join the course but want to practice mindfulness?

If you're curious but not quite ready to dive into a full course, you're welcome to join our Just Sit Mindfulness Meditation sessions every alternate Wednesday at 8pm at The Wellbeing Centre. These drop-in classes are a great way to gently explore mindfulness in a supportive environment.

How do I know if the Mindfulness Based Living Course is right for me?

If you’re looking for tools to help manage stress, build emotional resilience, or simply slow down in a fast-paced world, this course may be a great fit. Many participants join with no prior experience and leave feeling more grounded, self-aware, and supported.

General Disclaimer:

Mindfulness isn’t a cure-all. While it can offer profound benefits, it's not a substitute for medical or psychological care. Some studies on mindfulness show promising results, while others have limitations. If you’re experiencing severe anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns, please practice with care and consult a healthcare professional when needed.
